Oblivion is like $20, and Fallout is probably on sale get both if possible, I played Oblivion soooo much and want to play my FO3 but my PS3 is busted atm, I did not get very far in it, so I cannot fully comment. FO3 is definitely more mature of a game and is fairly depressing. It really depends what kind of environment/feel you want, Oblivion is definitely not as refined though.

If your getting either, make sure you get the PC version so you can download mods that fix issues in the game.

Oblivion had a terrible levelling system which placed emphasis on your minor skills over major skills in order to get the +5 attribute bonus upon level up. It also had scaling which was stupid and broke immersion.

Fallout 3 fixes this somewhat with a revamped levelling system which places a larger separation between your attributes or SPECIAL and skills, however the game still has many of the issues that plagued oblivion such as:

Ridiculously Easy Difficulty: Targetting arms and legs was extremely pointless when all you really need to do is fire at a targets head repeatedly and be able to kill it in 2-3 shots. All the potential "tactics" from crippling an enemies legs or making them drop their weapon were completely pointless when most enemies could just be quickly killed by headshots. In VATS you also only take 10% damage during the firing sequence making it a stupid temporary godmode button.

Redundant items: Throughout F3 I've never had to use a drug or edible in any encounter, other than stimpacks or radaways. While I like the risk reward of the drug bonuses vs. becoming addicted, they are so completely unnecessary that you'll end up stockpiling un-used drugs int he hundreds.

Stupidly imbalanced/underpowered perks: Comprehension and Educated come to mind which pretty much remove the decision making from placing skill points because you'll be swimming in them before you reach level 20, oh and you'll end up reaching the level cap really quickly unless you mod your game to slow it down (which you should). Also half the perks are useless but you can't really expect balance in a single player game.

Annoying Glitches: The game is full of them. Prepare for random crashes (Railway Rifle anyone?), Important NPC's dying because of bad scripting and NPC's getting stuck/behaving weirdly. In one instance I was in Rivet City and approached the Armory door but noticed it was locked and would be considered a crime if I opened it. However the game considered a small portion of the area around the door to be inside the armory and just standing there caused all the NPC's to become hostile, resulting in me having to kill a quest important NPC and bumming me out of one of the more powerful weapons in the game.

If you do get Fallout 3 I strongly consider playing with this mod as it greatly increases difficulty and immersion as well as giving more inclination to use some of the overshadowed aspects in vanilla Fallout 3. Changes include necessitating food, water and rest, balanced perks and skills, more dangerous radiation (You might actually have to use a Rad-X now) and reducing the amount of ammunition to make the game seem a lot more realistic and immersive. Oh yeah and the dismemberment got toned down which was something I actually liked (Why the hell was it possible in Vanilla F3 to decapitate someone with a rolling pin?) because it made the game seem less juvenile and didn't make it seem like everyones head was made out of water balloons filled with blood.

tldr, download the mod I suggest and it makes Fallout 3 a fun game which is probably better than all the other new releases lately.

Another vote for Fallout 3 over Oblivion - although I will say get both eventually

I find myself halfway through the game and I seem to have failed to locate Dogmeat somehow... Calls for more exploration - yay!

Dogmeat is easy to locate. Just go to Minefield town. Once you map travel there. Look on your compass and go South or South East. You should see a garbage dump site. Go in there and you'll find dogmeat. (You'll be in for a surprise) Oh there is also 4 raiders there, just let them be. (Trust me)
